How shoe glue actually works and why it beats the alternatives
Most people reach for super glue when a shoe breaks. That is a mistake. Cyanoacrylate glue dries hard and brittle. It cannot flex with the sole as you walk. After a few hundred steps the bond cracks and the repair fails. Shoe-specific adhesives like the one I used are polyurethane-based. They remain elastic after curing. That elasticity lets the glue stretch and compress as the shoe bends. It also bonds better to rubber and leather than other glues because it penetrates the porous material slightly before setting.
The chemistry is not complicated. Polyurethane reacts with moisture in the air to form a strong, flexible polymer. That is why the tube needs to be kept sealed. It is also why you should clamp the repair for at least 12 hours. The glue needs time to cure fully. If you try to walk on a shoe after only two hours, the bond will be weak. When repair makes sense and when it does not

If the upper is disintegrating from dry rot or sun damage, no amount of adhesive will bring it back. The same goes for shoes that have been soaked in salt water or heavily contaminated with oil. The glue will not bond to a dirty or chemically degraded surface.
But for many common failures, a tube of adhesive is the better choice. Sole separation along the edge, holes in the rubber outsole, torn lining cloth, loose heel cap, cracked rubber in the vamp area. These are all fixable. The key is to act early. The longer you wait, the more dirt and grit get into the gap. Dirt prevents adhesion. I clean every repair surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely before applying glue. That step is the fastest way to improve your success rate.
The final consideration is the value of your time. A proper shoe repair takes about five minutes of active work plus a day of waiting. If you earn $100 an hour, that active time is worth roughly $8. Add the cost of glue, and you are looking at a $14 investment. Compare that to the cost of new shoes or the cobbler fee. The numbers tilt in favor of repair for any shoe that cost more than $40. For cheaper shoes, the math gets closer, but even a $20 pair of flip-flops can be fixed once with a drop of glue if the strap breaks at the anchor point. I have done that too.
